MANILA, Philippines —  President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos Jr. has named retired Maj. Gen. Isagani Nerez as the new chief of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA).

Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin confirmed this in a Viber message to reporters on Tuesday.

Nerez took his oath at Malacañang earlier in the day. He will replace Director General Moro Virgilio Lazo.

In 2022, Nerez was appointed by Marcos as undersecretary of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Military Affairs.

The Iran-backed Houthis have detained dozens of staff from UN and other humanitarian organizations, most of them since June, claiming they are members of a “US-Israeli spy network,” a charge the United Nations denies.
